Isuzu will produce next-generation pick-up trucks for Mazda, based on Isuzu's pick-up truck model.

The next generation BT-50 will be built on the same platform as Isuzu's replacement for its current D-Max.

Mazda has officially announced that it will enter an agreement with Isuzu on a pick-up truck collaboration. As a result of this, Mazda can concentrate more of its resources on developing more passenger cars such as the MX-5 and crossovers such as the CX-3. The short press release featured barely any details but stated the collaboration would allow Isuzu to enhance its product competitiveness and Mazda to strengthen its product line-up and "maintain own-brand market coverage".

But Mazda has now found a new dance partner in the form of Isuzu.

Under the agreement Mazda will finally be able to divorce its BT-50 (below) from the Ford Ranger, with which the current-generation models share much of their mechanical package.

Now the BT-50 is based on the Ford Ranger, which was developed in Australia and is built in Thailand, but has unique exterior and interior styling.

The trucks will be sold in all markets except North America. The Isuzu deal will see the next-gen BT-50 built in an Isuzu facility.

Mazda and Isuzu will co-develop their next generation light commercial utes, with the two Japanese automakers today announcing a "basic agreement" that will see Isuzu responsible for the assembly of utes for both brands.

The current Holden Colorado and Isuzu D-Max utes share the same chassis and were originally developed side-by-side (although made in separate Thailand factories) before a rift developed and each brand elected to go their own way with diesel engines.
