Yet for a player who also lists writing poetry and reading books instead of going on Twitter among his interests, it doesn't seem to have negatively affected the game of the one of the SEC's biggest stars at the Wynfrey Hotel this week and the league.
Jake Coker, transfer from Florida State, leads Alabama to the 2015 national championship. Much of it has nothing to do with his first season as the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies in 2012, when he was named the victor of the Heisman Trophy.
After being the most valuable player of the 2014 Sugar Bowl where Knight has four touchdowns for Oklahoma in a 45-31 victory over Alabama, Knight wanted his college career to continue to pick up momentum. Knight will go into his senior season as the leader of the Aggies' offense, and head coach Kevin Sumlin is happy to have him.
Finally, he has a talented, veteran quarterback, someone who knows how to lead, someone who knows how to stay calm when things get sticky. I just go out there and play my best to the best of my ability.
It just wasn't going to be this year. Inconsistent play turned him into a reserve with the Sooners, and last season, he only attempted 40 passes-fewer than against the Crimson Tide.
And it was insane how it all happened.
By the time his junior season rolled around a year ago, he had lost his starting job to Taylor Mayfield. If Knight plays well at quarterback and the defense holds up, those games could hold the fate of the SEC West in the balance.
So he got his release from Oklahoma. I did homework on if there was a need at quarterback and if I fit the schemes. "It was like being recruited all over again". After a solid 9-4 year in 2013, the Aggies have gone 8-5 the last two years. Then on Christmas Eve, backup Murray said he was transferring to Oklahoma.
Knight has only been in the program for six months, but according to Sumlin has already shown the maturity and skill set needed to succeed in College Station.
"Fast forward a week or so and that situation is a little bit different", Knight said. "We started having more recruiting-like conversations and kept moving forward from there".
"He definitely wasn't begging, but he definitely saw a need for a quarterback".
While not answering that question, Sumlin acknowledged that he exchanged text messages with Manziel over the last two weeks. "So, you know, the growth during your career can happen quicker if you understand where your shortcomings are, and there was no greater teacher than losing this opportunity at Oklahoma".
"It was pretty simple, he earned it", Sumlin said.
Knight said his off-season self-assessment is something he got from Eli Manning.
"It's been a leap of faith in a lot of ways, but looking back on it, it has been flawless", Knight said.
A&M teammates Myles Garrett and Ricky Seals-Jones concur. "So, there's a combination of good things happening around (Knight)", Sumlin said.
"I haven't [talked to Dinson], but I wish the best for him", Seals-Jones said. "He's continued to think that way all summer". "New conference, new place, new team, new offense".
"You have to come in lightly and show your work ethic", Knight said. "That earns their respect as well". "It's apart of the game - football is a physical sport, but I do wish the best for him and a speedy recovery".
