The new release will debut atop the U.S. box office chart with approximately $103.2 million in weekend receipts.
"Pets" unseated "Finding Dory" from its three-week run in first place.
In second was "The Legend of Tarzan", which took in $20.61 million, giving it a domestic total of around $81 million.
Although Secret Life of Pets will be in its second weekend when Ghostbusters opens, the animated movie is being predicted to have a solid sophomore weekend which could see it bring in approximately 50 percent of its opening haul of $100 million. Not only is that one of the highest ever animated openings in general, it's the highest for an original (non-sequel or spinoff) animated movie. The movie, which cost around $140 million to make, has earned a dismal $38.7 million to date. For Ghostbusters, analysts are predicting that the movie will pull in at most around $40 million, which would put it solidly in the number two spot at the box office for its opening weekend. It received an A-minus CinemaScore, and 75% of Rotten Tomatoes critics rated it positively.
2016 is turning out to be the year of the animated feature, with entries from multiple studios breaking records, banking top dollars, and now outgunning the comic book movie genre. On Friday, the animated tentpole passed up fellow Disney title Captain America: Civil War ($406 million) to become the summer's top-grossing film to date in North America, finishing Sunday with an estimated total of $421 million.
"The prognosticators had us as low as $10 million - we never believed that - but this has even exceeded our pre-release expectations", said Chris Aronson, the studio's domestic distribution chief.
"Mike and Dave" stars Zac Efron and Adam Devine as hard-partying brothers who post an online ad to find their flawless female counterparts - and get more than they bargain for when they meet characters played by Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. Chernin Entertainment produced the film.
