Van Houten's partner, Australian actor Guy Pearce, announced the birth with a tongue-in-cheek tweet on Monday, saying: "A cute little package arrived and told us his name's Monte Pearce. We think we're gonna keep him", Pearce wrote.

Pearce and van Houten, who plays Melisandre on Game of Thrones, had confirmed the actress' pregnancy in March.

The baby, who is the first for both Carice and Guy, has been named Monte.

Van Houten is best known for playing the witch Melisandre on the HBO mega-hit Game of Thrones.

Van Houten retweeted Guy and added nine emojis, including a baby, a red heart, and a martini glass.

In season two of the hit US fantasy show the sorceress gave birth to a shadowy figure which murdered nobleman Renly Baratheon.

On another occasion, van Houten joked she "almost didn't fit in the mirror anymore" in a selfie whilst also sharing pictures of just some of the motherhood-related gifts she had received.

The Memento actor was previously married to psychologist Kate Mestitz from 1997 to 2015.
