Huma Abedin, a close aide to presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, announced in the midst of the campaign Monday that she was separating from husband Anthony Weiner following new revelations that he "sexted" another woman.
"After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband", Abedin, whose father is from India and mother from Pakistan, said in a statement to New York Post. In a statement to the Times, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that Abedin was "making a very wise decision", before pivoting to attack Clinton.
According to the report, the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the electronic chats between her and Weiner began in late January 2015 and continued through earlier this month.
The woman in question is a Trump supporter and NRA fan who has used Twitter to criticize both President Obama and Hillary Clinton. So I've been trying to do some catching up and that brought me to Weiner, the documentary about Anthony Weiner, the disgraced NY politician. who just got himself disgraced a third time, and again for the same thing - sexting via Twitter DMs. "Who knows what he learned and who he told".
Trump immediately seized on the aide's marital split to accuse Clinton of "bad judgment".
Trump said it's possible "that our country and its security have been greatly compromised by this".
They have a three-year-old son, Jordan Zain Weiner. Now, Abedin serves as vice chairwoman of the campaign and is considered one of Clinton's closest advisers.
It remains to be seen how much - if any - attention it will take away from Clinton's campaign.
One photograph, reportedly sent in July 2015, shows former NY congressman from the waist down wearing only a pair of boxers.
Two years later, he attempted a comeback by running for mayor of NY and was caught flirting on Twitter again and sexting using the nom de plume "Carlos Danger".
"Someone just climbed into my bed", Weiner texted the woman.
Despite her husband's embarrassing escapades, Abedin stayed by his side, acknowledging during the 2013 mayoral campaign that they had undergone "a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy" because of his indiscretions.
Abedin has worked for Clinton for the last two decades.
It's been just over five years since former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner resigned from office after he accidentally tweeted an inappropriate photo of himself and lied about it before coming clean.
