James Milner says he's still adjusting to his new role at Liverpool but insisted: "I'm learning as fast as I can". It was a wonderful goal, brilliant play.
He sounded phlegmatic but looked slightly crestfallen. Four points from nine is not what I wanted but it's OK. Tottenham viewed the linesman's flag as a lifeline, a second chance to salvage something from a match in which they had been far from their best. The attacking prowess of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and the newcomer Vincent Janssen is yet to really catch fire this season.
"It feels worst now than the last time we were here last season. I sign again to do the same". Despite Spurs fielding a congested midfield with the likes of Wanyama and Dier in it, the Reds managed to find space to operate in and looked more threatening for the rest of the game. From the start the thrust of Mané and trickery of Philippe Coutinho tested Tottenham. This gave him enough time to swing a cross into the penalty spot where Lamela would head the ball towards an unmarked Danny Rose to score in the 72nd minute.
With Spaniard Alberto Moreno still to convince in a Liverpool shirt, Milner is being asked to fill in at left-back and Klopp suggested there could be a long-term future for him in the role.
Tottenham needed a response, a shot of energy, of inspiration after the break. Liverpool, on the other hand, almost expanded their lead when Matip smashed a header into the crossbar. Pochettino ran down the tunnel and thumped a door in frustration. "We played football and defended really good". Eric Dier was at right-back, but he became increasingly unsafe in the second half.
The game rather died down after the frantic start, with Mane running through on goal only to be twice thwarted by sweeper-keeper Vorm the only real highlights of the first 40 minutes. We have shown over the previous year that we can beat anyone.
"He still has to adapt and learn because he's not had 500 games in this position but we will work on it, like we work on every player", Klopp went onto say.
"We dominated the game".
"He did not have a ideal pre-season, that's how it is", he said. "I was very pleased [with our reaction]", Pochettino said in his post-match press conference.
"I said last week play Sturridge or sell him, and that opinion hasn't changed". It is hard because some players are going, some will play, others no.
