TEL AVIV-Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday praised plans by U.S. President Donald Trump's new administration to build a wall on the Mexico border, saying his country's own barrier on the Egyptian border had halted illegal immigration.
"The Foreign Ministry expressed to the government of Israel, via its ambassador in Mexico, its profound astonishment, rejection and disappointment over Prime Minister Netanyahu's message on Twitter about the construction of a border wall. It stopped all illegal immigration", Netanyahu said. "Great success. Great idea". "Mexico is Israel's friend and should be treated as such".
Donald Trump announced this week that he had ordered the immediate construction of his promised wall along the USA border with Mexico.
"The wall is necessary", Trump said Thursday.
President Trump has yet to respond to Netanyahu's support for the wall.

Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order instructing the federal government to begin building the wall, in addition to hiring thousands of new Border Patrol agents. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto nixed his planned January 31 meeting with Trump, after the latter tweeted that the meeting should be canceled if Mexico won't pay for the construction.
Israel's southern wall was built because they were facing an influx of African immigrants traveling through Egypt seeking political asylum and refuge in the Jewish State.
On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order indefinitely banning refugees from Syria and barring people from six other Muslim-majority countries from entering the USA for 90 days unless they hold a diplomatic visa.
