SC turns down Asaram's bail plea, orders fresh FIR for faking documents

The bail plea of self styled Godman Asaram Bapu was rejected on Monday by the Supreme Court.

The bench also dismissed his plea for interim and regular bail saying that the accused himself was delaying the trial and his medical condition was not serious enough to release him on bail.

The apex court has also slapped a fine Rs 1 lakh on the self styled godman and observed that the plea was devoid of merit.

Asaram's lawyer had filed a letter purported to have been issued by the superintendent of Jodhpur jail.

"Findings from the extent of completed evaluation reveal the petitioner's (Asaram) medical condition as "Stable", the board had said in its September 21, 2016 report to the top court, bt noted the evaluation of his prostate ailment remained incomplete because of Asaram's refusal to undergo required tests.

Despite confessing Aasaram's lawyer that the document was not genuine, the court has refused to let him off with apology and ordered to lodge FIR and even also directed to initiate criminal proceeding against those who are responsible for filing forged documents.

Asaram has been facing allegations of sexual assault. The bail was sought on medical grounds.

This was the seventh bail application that has been rejected by court.

When the teenager girl accused Asaram Bapu of sexual assault at his ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur.

The Jodhpur Police arrested Asaram on August 3, 2013 and since then he is in prison. The girl was a student living in the ashram and she was from Uttar Pradesh Shahjahanpur.
