Starbucks launches voice ordering through mobile app, Alexa

The new feature will allow customers to order, pay and modify their order just by speaking into the app.

Along with My Barista, the franchise is also releasing a dedicated "Reorder Skill" for Amazon Alexa, which will make it easier for customers to get their usual order by addressing Alexa with the magic phrase "Order my Starbucks". Starbucks is about to make it even easier to order and pay for your coffee.

In any case, the aim of My Starbucks Barista is to let you order food and drink items as if you were talking to a barista in-store.

You can already place your Starbucks orders using your smartphone, but today we're seeing the massive coffee company expand on that functionality by rolling out a voice ordering feature.

This is Starbuck's second recent venture into conversational commerce, following the launch of the My Starbucks barista chatbot for the Starbucks app last month. "Our team is focused on making sure that Starbucks voice ordering within our app is truly personal and equally important was finding the right partner in Amazon to test and learn from this new capability".

The feature will be available through the existing Starbucks app for iOS as it rolls out slowly over the year.

Starbucks chief technology officer Gerri Martin-Flickinger says in a statement that the company expects to "learn a lot from both of these experiences and to evolve them over time". If you have Amazon's Alexa, there's now a Starbucks Reorder Skill.
