Acosta, first Hispanic Trump cabinet pick

Will Oprah Video of Battered Ex-Wife Sink Trump's Labor Secretary Nominee?

An old episode of Oprah comes back to haunt Trump labor nominee

He was a member of the National Labor Relations Board, and in 2003, President George W. Bush appointed him to serve to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the civil rights division of the Department of Justice.

Acosta is now the dean at Florida International University law school, a role he has served since 2009.

President Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Labor, CEO Andrew Puzder of CKE Restaurants, has withdrawn himself from consideration after mounting controversy over his past and concerns that he would not have the votes for confirmation.

"No matter how you cut it, there is no worse pick for Labor Secretary than Andrew Puzder, and I'm encouraged my Republican colleagues are starting to agree", Schumer said. While DeVos scraped through her senate confirmation with the aid of Vice President Mike Pence casting a deciding vote; Puzder may not have had that lifeline if so many Republican senators had turned against him.

It only would have taken three Republican senators to scupper Puzder's nomination for good. A Florida native and the son of Cuban immigrants, he is Trump's first Latino Cabinet nominee. And they say that despite Puzder's plan to divest from his financial holdings if confirmed, he favors business interests over worker protections enforced by the Labor Department.

Puzder's failed nomination is the latest loss for the White House, which is stumbling through a period of turmoil following the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn earlier this week. Puzder went through a messy divorce and his ex-wife made allegations of domestic abuse that were later recanted. "We don't need a labor secretary who makes millions while his workers are paid starvation wages". Andrew Puzder, who is now CEO of CKE Restaurants, was scheduled to appear before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions tomorrow (February 16). Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told reporters that Puzder was an "outstanding choice". In addition, Puzder disclosed last week that he failed to pay taxes for an undocumented housekeeper.
