Antoine Griezmann scored a late victor to complete a stunning fightback by Atletico Madrid, who beat Celta Vigo 3-2 on Sunday with two goals in three minutes.
But last week the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker reminded the club and manager Diego Simeone that he still has something to offer by scoring twice in a 2-0 win for Atletico against Leganes.
Atletico Madrid entered Sunday's match in fifth place in La Liga.
The goal drew Atletico Madrid level at 1-1.
Making just his sixth league start of the season, Torres cancelled out Gustavo Cabral's early opener for Celta with an incredible 11th-minute equaliser.
The 32-year-old, who has had a semi-successful second stint with Atletico, also managed to miss from the penalty spot in the 30th minute of the game.
It looked like it would cost Atletico dear when Celta took the lead 12 minutes from time through John Guidetti.
But Fernando Torres quickly pulled them level with a splendid strike, receiving the ball with his back to goal and flicking it over his head into the top corner. They have moved up to fourth, one point above Real Sociedad.
Elsewhere in La Liga on Sunday, third-placed Sevilla returned to form with a 1-0 win at Las Palmas, secured by Joaquin Correa's first La Liga goal, 10 minutes from the end.
