Marijuana legislation is on the move in Montpelier.
One day after a Pike County teenager was killed in an ATV crash, a bill that would require ATV riders under 18 to wear a helmet has unanimously cleared an Indiana Senate panel. Rep. Scott Slater (D-Providence), sponsor of House Bill 5555, and Sen. In the end, the Senate amendment was adopted, amendments to take funds from sales taxes on cars and to eliminate the grocery tax entirely failed, and Haslam advisor Stephen Smith - who had presented the measure to the House on both days - was given a very good birthday present indeed. Both bills are now before their respective judiciary committees. Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner (R-Dickinson) told the Committee the bill's objective is to give the voters of North Dakota what they want - and that's medical marijuana, not recreational marijuana. The House should continue its work on this bill. It would also expire in 2020 if the Legislature doesn't renew it. Wednesday's vote was not part of the original committee schedule. That measure bars patients and caregivers from growing their own plants and restricts the use of smoked medical marijuana to cases where a physician attests that no other form of marijuana would be effective.
The Georgia Senate approved a House substitute to a bill that would allow breweries in the state to sell beer directly to customers. Rep. Jeremy Faison (R-Crosby) said Tuesday that his medical marijuana bill, House Bill 495, is dead because senators were afraid to vote for it.
