March Madness: Florida stuns Wisconsin on buzzer-beating three in overtime

SC had never been to the Elite Eight before. Game tips off Saturday at 6:09 p.m. from San Jose, Calif.

Try telling that to Florida and SC. Game tips off Sunday at 2:20 p.m. from NY.

Wisconsin Badgers senior forward Nigel Hayes scored 22 points with six rebounds, two assists, and one steal in Friday's loss to the Florida Gators.

It's been a relatively boring NCAA Tournament so far, but Friday night's East Region Sweet 16 matchup is why we call it March Madness. Florida will move on to face SC, a team amidst their own dream tourney run after going winless in the NCAA's over the last 40 years.

DJ Dozier and Chris Silva had 12 points each and Duane Notice added 11 for the Gamecocks.

Not Chiozza. He did exactly what you're supposed to do, taking the inbounds pass from Canyon Barry, pushing the ball hard against Nigel Hayes, who he knew couldn't foul, and waiting until the last possible second before launching. UW forced a Gator turnover after the Happ made field goal and had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer. All along, I've had UCLA beating Kansas to advance to the final, a prediction in which I'm still confident - but less so than two weeks ago, because Josh Jackson appears to be the truth and Kansas has mopped the floor with everyone they've faced so far. But let's be honest: in an odd way, a potential Final Four bid looks a lot more achievable with a win over the Gators than it does over a unfamiliar (yet lower-seeded) Wisconsin team, doesn't it?

The third-seeded Bruins (31-5) still have the most national titles.

And tomorrow, the Badgers will take on Florida in The Sweet Sixteen. Florida is in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2014, and for the first time with second-year coach Mike White - the man who replaced Billy Donovan in Gainesville. The Badgers scored eight straight points in the final 1:49 of regulation to tie it. Luke Maye put up 16 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. SC took a 15-point lead at halftime and didn't let off the gas in the second half.

Carolina, which reached the Elite Eight for the 27th time, will face Kentucky on Sunday. The Tar Heels connected on 54.4 percent of their shots, while Butler was at 43.5 percent.

The game between the Gators, seeded fourth in the East Region, and the eighth-seeded Badgers had become the tournament's first overtime contest thanks to Showalter's improbable effort, eerily similar to what Chiozza would pull off.

In one of the most gut-wrenching battles in March Madness lore, where both Florida and Wisconsin seemingly had the game won at different points, Chiozza hit a running three-point shot as the clock expired in overtime to give the Gators an 84-83 victory Friday night in an epic Sweet 16 showdown at Madison Square Garden.
