The Australia had scored 260 on a hard pitch.

On Monday, Australia skipper was seen on television calling Murali Vijay a "f****** cheat" for claiming a catch at gully and keeper Matthew Wade had lengthy exchange of words with both Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin. India had to score 441 runs for their win. Vijay survived two close LBW appeals from Josh Hazlewood in the first over of the day but Rahul eased the nerves by hitting a couple of boundaries. However, the India batting team didn't play well apart from KL Rahul's 90 in the first innings. As a result, the Australian side was bowled out for just 137 runs in their second innings. In return, India scored 332 runs and lost all wickets.

Before Australia, India defeated Srilanka, West Indies, New Zealand and England on a trot. Only Sunil Gavaskar, in his debut series in 1970-71 in the West Indies, has had a longer such run for India. The award for the players will be on a pro-rata basis which means money to given to the cricketers would depend on the number of matches they have played in the series.

One of the most intense series in recent memory finished with a whimper after India made short work of Australia's modest target to cruise home by eight wickets.

A terrific display of fast bowling from Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar left the Australians hopping on the ground.

Describing the four-match series triumph against Australia as "unbelievable", Kohli also hailed the Steve Smith-led side for their fighting spirit and maturity.

India were the favourites to win the series right from the start, but the way Australia started with an emphatic win in the first Test, the home team were aware that the Aussies were going to be their biggest test this home season. He took 17-wickets in the four-match series.

An Australian reporter asked if Kohli still considered Steve Smith's men his friends off the field as he had said at the start of the series.

India's star in this series, Pujara, said: "Fantastic series".

The marathon home-season which had started off against NZ previous year finished off with their arch-rivals Australia today clearly stating India's success.

But that was the only bit of success the Australians would manage to celebrate as Rahul and Rahane batted aggressively to guide India to victory.
