Actress Debbie Reynolds (L) accepts the life achievement award from her daughter actress Carrie Fisher at the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, California January 25, 2015.
More than a thousand people paid tribute to the mother-daughter duo at a public memorial, held near their burial sites at Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles.
He did not attend the service but the song accompanied a video montage.
The program included dances performed to "Good Mornin'" and "Singin' in the Rain", the titular song from Reynolds' youthful star turn in the hit musical film.
In a nod to one of Fisher's most famous roles, a special guest star made an appearance.
Fisher died aged 60 on December 27 after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles.
Before her death, Fisher had completed filming for her part in the latest "Star Wars" episode, "The Last Jedi", which is due for release in December. Fisher said his mother didn't like memorials, so he was calling it a show that would reveal his loved ones like never before.
"It was a very peaceful exit that only my mother could have orchestrated", he said to booming laughter. She was trained in Hollywood where they teach you to make a great entrance and exit.
"We shouldn't be here so soon in our lives", Aykroyd said. It is clear, Fisher's friendship meant the world to the singer, and he found the flawless way to express all the joy she brought to his life, as well as the pain of losing her.
"We all had a crush on Carrie like you wouldn't believe", he said. Carrie Fisher battled mental illness and addiction, exploring her struggles in the book "Postcards from the Edge".
But today, a public memorial was held for them both at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in L.A.
"Although Carrie and I did not get married we had taken blood tests in anticipation of maybe having a child".
"Then there was the time she promised if I went 1st-she'd heckle my funeral".
"We knew movies would never be the same, and you just knew Carrie's life would never be the same", he said.
