After scrapping 457 visa, Australia reveals tougher citizenship laws

At the end of 2016, there were 6,139 Irish people availing of this particular visa.

Applicants will have to wait four years before applying for citizenship instead of one now, prove a higher degree of proficiency in English and pass a citizenship test to show they have "Australian values" and can integrate into society, Turnbull said Thursday.

"I want you to be the first to know": Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

If an applicant failed the test three times they would have to wait another two years before they could sit it again.

Technically speaking, the 457 visa is a temporary one for skilled workers, but it was one of the few that offered a path to citizenship for those who continued to work in the country.

Australia unveiled plans on Thursday to make its citizenship test more hard.

The government has assured that the companies who have majority of foreign workers under 457 visa programmes need not worry because the new scheme will ensure that company continue to get the requisite skilled labour.

Stating that Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs, he said: "We will no longer allow 457 Visa system to be passports to jobs that could and should go to Australians".

Inspired by Trump, Prime Minister Turnbull has also pitched for "Australians First" and said Australian jobs should be for Australians.

Under the proposals, new arrivals would face a tougher citizenship test which would assess their commitment to Australia and their attitudes to religious freedom and gender equality.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said the country should not be embarrassed to say it wants great people to call Australia home.

The new temporary skills shortage (TSS) visa comes with tightened requirements and a much shorter list of potential jobs available.

The Australian Prime Minister also stressed that English language proficiency was essential for economic participation and integration into the Australian community and social cohesion. India has the highest number of applicants, with a total of 6,260 applicants (or 26.6 percent of total applicants) according to the latest quarterly report from the Australian government.

Both visas require two years of relevant work experience, something not required under the old 457 visa, which was automatically valid for four years.
