Comey sought more Russia resources before firing, sources say

Huckabee Sanders, filling in for Sean Spicer at Wednesday's press briefing, tried to defend President Trump's decision to abruptly dismiss Comey late Tuesday - a move that caught much of Washington off guard and sparked outrage from Democrats and several key Republicans as well.

The president's sacking of an Obama-era holdover who had openly defied him was certainly less controversial than the Comey dismissal, but it drew heavy criticism from Democrats, who said Ms Yates had done her job in standing up to the travel ban. That, he and other Democrats argue, requires appointing a special prosecutor outside the government, with no political ties to Trump. Burr later announced that acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe will testify before the committee in place of Comey.

"You can't make this stuff up", Rep. Adam Schiff of California, top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said Wednesday on MSNBC.

Comey's statement came shortly before the 2016 presidential election, causing chaos for Clinton's campaign.

Comey was scheduled to speak to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, but Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) told the Times.

The first hint of that came when the country's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, arrived at the State Department on Wednesday and immediately joked about Comey's firing. "Very simply, he was not doing a good job".

"We should always be aware that we don't get to choose what we are to be protected from", he said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC on CNN's "New Day": "I think Director Comey is a fine man, but Democrats called for his removal about two to three, four weeks ago and now he's gone and we get a chance to pick on a new director that hopefully we can all agree is above reproach".

Some feared the president went too far in firing Comey, and that the timing looked suspicious.

Trump made a similar case on Twitter, saying Comey had "lost the confidence of nearly everyone in Washington", adding: "When things calm down, they will be thanking me!"

"I think it was particularly interesting how Mr. Snowden framed rights as outside of the national law". Sanders said the White House would "encourage" the next FBI chief to complete the Russian Federation investigation.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also said he wants the White House to start answering questions.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia: "The FBI is the premier law enforcement agency in the world and it is critical to have a director who holds the trust of the American people". "And because of the president's decisive action yesterday to restore confidence and trust of the American people, we have an opportunity for a new beginning at the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

The people at Paddy Power online sports book have spoken on which candidates they believe have the best odds of winning the position as the new FBI Director, and one of them may surprise you. "Today I reiterate the need for Congress to establish a select committee with full investigatory powers to thoroughly examine this matter".
