Dismissive: Steve Hansen says he knows how Lions will play

"I'm very, very disappointed considering there's 41 players there and we haven't got one forward out of the 22 or whatever it is forwards", said the Scot.

Scotland finished fourth, above Wales, in this season's Six Nations and Telfer thought Hamish Watson and John Barclay were unlucky to miss out.

"When you look at the half-backs Wales, Ireland and England have and in terms of the schedule you've got running into our prep, I think when you play together you've got a natural combination".

The Lions will play 10 games in New Zealand, including three Tests against the All Blacks.

"I certainly wasn't that mature going into the last tour but now I fully believe I am and as I say I was a better player coming off the back of that".

"We couldn't leave Jamie out".

"The prognosis with him is a lot more positive than was first diagnosed in terms of it's an unusual injury with a capsule thing, or something, but the prognosis and the recovery is hopefully a lot better than what was potentially first suspected". Our advantage is we play with that expectation all the time.

Launchbury was another to slip out of contention in the ferociously competitive second row position despite emerging as England's stand-out performer during the Six Nations, winning two man of the match awards.

"If you are happy when you turn up for training every Monday, if you keep morale up, you are more likely to get more out of the boys on the field. We discussed at length about it", said Borthwick.

"We are going to have to be slightly more attacking than we are used to (in the Six Nations)".

"Those are the sort of players, with no disrespect, who might struggle to make the first test team but they will be giving everything they can on and off the field". And Iain Henderson has done an exceptional job for Ireland. I guess we need to be prepared for what we normally get and prepare for something different as well. "They're different players and if we'd left out Courtney we'd be asked the same questions".

After an exciting and genuinely encouragement campaign, it is a bitter blow to the players, and a great disappointment to supporters, to see only two Scots selected in the 41-strong the British and Irish Lions squad for this summer's tour of New Zealand.

Gatland named Sexton as one of three out-halves alongside Wales's Dan Biggar and England's Owen Farrell, who will also provide an option for the Lions as a second receiver at inside centre.

But up against the reigning world champions, who were on a record-equalling run of wins until Ireland beat them in in Chicago last autumn, Best admits it will be a different challenge altogether.

"Beauden Barrett is not kicking at the moment, his brother is for the Hurricanes and it may be the difference".
