During his postfight interview following his unanimous decision shutout of Chavez, Alvarez announced that he will fight Gennady Golovkin in September. Canelo Alvarez is a considerable favorite (-600) in the fight set to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo's convincing defeat of Chavez was his seventh straight victory since he suffered the only defeat of his professional career, in 51 fights, to Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013. Additionally, this fight will be fought at almost 10 pounds heavier (164.5) than any previous fight for Alvarez who typically fights at 155. "First I had to win this fight". Instead, we got an in-ring promotion of Alvarez's upcoming fight, which will be against ... GGG.
Alvarez, now 49-1-1 (34 KOs) made it clear that he had no fear in facing Golovkin, who is 37-0 with 33 knockouts. It's the fight that boxing fans have been yearning for several months, as Golovkin and Alvarez are clearly the two best middleweights in the world and certainly among the best pound-for-pound boxers. Chavez admitted his trainer wanted him to attack and throw more punches but apparently it diddn't work as he was simply outclassed by Alvarez, who was active even after putting up extra 10 pounds to satisfy the agreed 164.5 pounds catch weight.
"I showed I could move, I could box, I could do everything", Canelo said after the fight to a mixture of cheers and boos, a tiny trickle of sweat all there was to indicate he had been in a prizefight.
The venue has not been announced, but Alvarez confirmed that the Ukrainian's WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titles will be on the line for the September clash. Alvarez will fight "Triple G" on Sept.16.
Alvarez had a 228-71 edge in punches landed and an 83-15 advantage in jabs landed, the AP reported.
Canelo v Chavez Jr is live on BoxNation this Saturday night. Right now, I think everyone is excited for September. But me and my side we are ready to go. No one thought the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would happen but I had patience.
The 26-year-old now lays claim to victories over Chavez Jr., Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan, but the biggest crack of his quickly expanding legacy has been his reluctance to fight Golovkin.
'Canelo looked very good tonight, and 100 percent he is the biggest challenge of my career.
"Why? Because Canelo's got a chance to fight a guy who's taller, who's going to come in bigger".
