This effort is called Operation C.A.R.E.

Dubbed the "On the Road / On The Water, Don't Drink & Drive" campaign, the Highway Patrol will be watching roadways, while the NC Wildlife Resources Commission will be out in force on the waterways.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety encourages residents to wear seat belts, get designated drivers, and follow the speed limits.

Over the 2016 Memorial Day holiday weekend, 13 people were killed and 451 were injured in 1,045 traffic crashes.

Past year during a similar holiday period, troopers investigated 430 crashes that resulted in 232 injuries and five fatalities. "Don't be a part of the statistics", he said. Obey all traffic laws and make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

"We focus a lot on some things over the holidays like following too closely, wearing your seat belts, but we're finding that what's starting to kind of creep back a little bit is speeding".

The statewide extra enforcement is held every Memorial Day holiday, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year and the traditional kickoff of summer.
