He lasted three-plus innings in his shortest start this season, and his ERA rose from 4.57 to 5.63.

The Tigers are third in the AL Central at 22-and-23, four games behind the Twins.

Houston got five hits combined in the second through fifth innings, but wasn't able to string enough together to put Fulmer in a bind. Yet, the first-place Astros didn't skip a beat in Keuchel's absence.

Tigers: Daniel Norris (2-3, 4.81 ERA) will start on Wednesday for Detroit.

Will Harris struck out two in the eighth, and Giles closed it out in the ninth for his 12th save of the season. Minnesota trailed 5-0 in the second inning and 6-2 entering the fifth before cranking up the offense against Ubaldo Jimenez and an ineffective Baltimore bullpen.

In Tuesday's game, the Tigers will be rolling out RHP Jordan Zimmerman.

The Houston Astros used a group effort to make up for what they hope is the one start ace Dallas Keuchel will miss with a pinched nerve in his neck. Morton hasn't been the most reliable starter for Houston in 2017.

With a team's success comes pretty stat lines, which is exactly what you'll see throughout this preview for the Astros. He has struck out 56 in 48 1/3 innings. He used all four of his pitches and he competed very well. His season ERA is 2.55.

This matchup will be the story of who can bounce back after a rough outing. He walked two batters as well, giving him at least two walks in every start this season. He was a starter down the stretch last season, going 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA over five starts after joining the rotation on September 6 against the Indians. When we look back on the 2017 season, a sleepy couple of early weeknights in May, nights with less than 24,000 fans on hand, will nearly certainly be dwarfed by other more spectacular memories.

Houston Astros' Norichika Aoki watches his sacrifice fly during the fourth inning of a baseball game against the Detroit Tigers, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, in Houston. McCann was injured on May 14 against the Yankees when he got crossed up on a pitch by Charlie Morton and was hit in the mask by the ball.

Michael Fulmer was equally impressive for the Tigers, tossing 7 innings of one run ball.

Saturday's result was the third win in four starts for Verlander and this is right around the time of year where he tends to turn it on and carry the load for the Tigers through June and July. "We're not happy with losses, but baseball is a long season".

"We're starting to get going again ... the last couple days".

The Tigers actually have good matchups this week from a pitching standpoint, with Fulmer going Monday night against a reliever and Verlander finishing the series on Thursday against Fiers. Brandon Belt also connected, and Ty Blach pitched into the eighth inning in the first meeting between the teams since San Francisco was eliminated by Chicago in the NL Division Series a year ago.
