Joshua knocks out Klitschko to unify heavyweight title

Anthony Joshua survived the first knockdown of his young career, coming back to drop Wladimir Klitschko twice before stopping him in the 11th round Saturday night to retain his heavyweight titles.

Klitschko was knocked down by a left hook and one more time before the referee David Fields stopped the fight while Klitschko was absorbing a flurry of punches by Joshua in the corner.

"I'm a little bit emotional, because I know I've got doubters that think that I can't do this and do that, but I dig deep".

"This is boxing - I'm only going to improve", Joshua told Sky Sports News. "Sometimes you have to ride a few shots and take a few shots before pushing on for victory". I enjoy fighting, I love fighting. Klitschko went down and Joshua raised his hands in triumph, only to take severe punishment as Klitschko came back to batter him late in the round.

"Lastly, as a boxer, leave your ego at the door and respect your opponent".

Wladimir Klitschko was as close as one punch away from beating Anthony Joshua in Saturday's world heavyweight title showdown, his manager has claimed.

"I want to give 90,000 people another chance to come back and watch some boxing here", shouts out Joshua who is now a three-belt champion as he also holds the IBO title. "He's a role model in and out of the ring".

Joshua picked up the first knockdown in the fight, dropping the champ in the 5th round, however it was Klitschko who then swung the fight in his favor as he dropped Joshua earlier in the very next round. "I wouldn't mind fighting him again; if he wants a rematch no problem". "I showed tonight that fights are won in the gym".

At the time the fight ended, Joshua was ahead on two cards (96-93 and 95-93), and Klitschko led 95-93 on the other. "The best man won tonight, and it's unbelievable event for boxing", Klitschko said. "It's really sad I didn't make it tonight". "I was planning to do it but it didn't work", Klitschko said.

It is not yet clear if the option of a rematchas stipulated in the contract of the fight will be taken.

"If people don't want to see a rematch, it won't happen".

"Let's just remember it was tough fight for Klitschko and it was a tough fight for Joshua".

Should the fight get pulled together and organised, it might well be.
