PM Narendra Modi has named India's longest river bridge over the Brahmaputra after singer Bhupen Hazarika.

Another major infrastructure, the 4.94 km rail cum road Bogibeel bridge, expected to be thrown open to public sometime in 2018, will connect Dibrugarh in Upper Assam to Dhemaji district which is lying at Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Parties like the Congress, Mamata Banerjee-led TMC and the Left have spoken about fielding a "secular" opposition candidate if the BJP-led NDA picks a nominee with Hindutva leanings.

Soon after his arrival, Modi left for Dhola to inaugurate the river bridge.

"Policy paralysis on Kashmir is definitely among the big failures of the Central government", suggests the report while regretting that NDA government's Kashmir policy is formulated by either retired intelligence officers or RSS workers, it added.

Modi is however expected to launch more infrastructure projects in Assam later.

Approval for the bridge was given by the Union Cabinet in 2009 under the UPA government. “This bridge is not only a pride for Assam but it is also an honour for the entire country because the nation has been able to build the longest bridge in the remotest end of Assam, ” he said.

"If Atal Bihari Vajpayeeji had returned to power in 2004, then you would have got this bridge 10 years ago. In the last three years, there was not a single day when we did not take a step".

Addressing the nation here on completion of third years in the office by the BJP-led government, Modi pledged to set up a "class less society" in the country where people from all walks of life would be living with dignity and dignity of labour would be respected most.

The Prime Minister further said that enhanced connectivity between the North-East and other parts of the country is a priority for the Union Government, and work has been greatly speeded up in this regard. She said, "Bravado, rhetoric and hyperbole sum up the three years of BJP government". This bridge has already opened a wide market for the farmers of the region, ” he said.

Modi said India is an agrarian economy but nothing much has been done for the development of agriculture sector.

“The government is giving importance to development of the Northeast because the countrys progress greatly depends on harnessing the potentials of the region like tourism, power generation, etc. Through the Brahmaputra river ferry, the journey would take about four and a half hours.
