Nigerian President's Absences Fuel Concern About His Failing Health

Buhari to preside over FEC meeting today

President Muhammadu Buhari

Despite Mrs Aisha Buhari's reassurances, the president failed to attend the meeting of the federal executive council, which was held as usual within walking distance of the presidential villa.

"It's exactly what he said, that he has been advised to take it easy by his doctor and that he will soon also go back (to London) for further treatment".

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has said that it is necessary that President Muhammadu Buhari should disclose his health status to Nigerians.

Mr Buhari returned from the United Kingdom in March after seven weeks of sick leave. Also, though basically politicization of things like illness and death is, morally speaking, a display of sheer insensitivity, yet, politically speaking, it is unfortunately not. And if the doctor says "oh, you take a rest", I think you recover faster when you rest and when you ought to rest rather that forcing yourself to work when you are not fit to work.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, and other government officials, including the President's wife, Aisha Buhari, have, however, assured Nigerians that that there is no cause for alarm over his health.

"We thank all of them for their concern". "The real concern is that people around him might be blocking him from getting treatment overseas, for selfish reasons", Ibrahim said.

He said Buhari was delighted over the stability in the forex market.

Rumors about the president's health have given rise to considerable uncertainty in the country, with some people comparing the current situation with the leadership drama that characterized the end of the late Umaru Yar'Adua presidency.

The president's absence yesterday at the meeting was the third consecutive time the president would be staying away from FEC.
