"We are excited to add the ECHL's Quad City Mallards as an affiliate", said Vegas Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee.
George McPhee, the expansion Golden Knights general manager, had such a busy week of trade talks at the NHLs pre-draft combine in Buffalo that he anticipates formally announcing several trades within the next few days.
Saturday, June 17: Protection Day After 3 p.m. ET on this day, NO MORE MOVES ALLOWED (including contract extensions, re-signings, etc.). "I imagine things will pick up next week".
Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, Mark Jankowski, Dillon Dube, Adam Fox, Andrew Mangiapane and the goaltenders mentioned above, among others, have all shown a lot of promise and look like they'll be able to contribute at the National Hockey League level. Its been a busy week, but certainly productive.. Others are offering packages in exchange for McPhee's promise not to select certain unprotected players in the expansion draft.
Teams will also have a period where they can ask players to waive their no-movement clauses for the expansion draft.
That leaves McPhee juggling numerous trade options and opportunities to acquire players or draft picks as compensation to address the franchises short- and long-term needs. Even though they gave up a few high picks for Dougie Hamilton, the team is still loaded with quality prospects (and young players like Matthew Tkachuk, who has already graduated to the NHL). "And we're trying to find ways to accommodate each other". We wont be able to do that with everyone..
And in yet another twist to the Vegas story, the Golden Knights will have an exclusive 72-hour period to sign unrestricted free agents during the expansion draft starting on the morning of June 18, giving them an 11-day head start over the rest of the league.
McPhee laughed when informed of Treliving's remark.
"I am very familiar with people in both organizations, so I am confident this affiliation will be a great fit for the Mallards", said Mallards president and general manager Bob McNamara.
Vegas must select 30 players (1 from each team), including at least 20 who are under contract for 2017-18. As reported earlier, if the Golden Knights sign a free agent from a team as part of this window, that counts as their expansion selection from that team. McPhee, however, acknowledged there's no way of determining what strategy the team takes until the actual list is revealed.
McPhee said he doesn't know how many deals he'll make before June 21, but he's willing to listen to all offers.
"The face of our franchise will be our logo. That's the way we're going to try and to things and be team-centric", he said. We dont feel the need to go get names.. He shot down the rumor of acquiring Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin, saying, "I don't think there's going to be anything happening there".
"When we first looked at the expansion draft and were going through it, we sort of had an idea of what we might be able to accomplish", McPhee said.
