"His concern was, because we're looking at the potential - again, that's the subject of the investigation - coordination between the campaign and Russian Federation, because it was President Trump - President-elect Trump's campaign, this person's view was, inevitably, his behavior, his conduct will fall within the scope of that work", Comey said.
Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating alleged ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, has hired 13 lawyers to handle the probe, and has plans to add more, according to Peter Carr, his spokesman.
The Post reported that FBI agents and federal prosecutors are also looking into the financial dealings of Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former campaign policy adviser Carter Page. In May, the Department of Justice appointed him special counsel to oversee the investigation into possible collusion between Russian officials and Trump campaign associates during the 2016 presidential election.
As the Post noted, Kushner is just the latest associate of the president to be under scrutiny for questionable business dealings with Russian Federation.
Earlier Thursday, Trump took to his favorite social media platform to assail reports that a special counsel is investigating obstruction of justice allegations against him. They have no idea what evidence the FBI has, and until the investigation is completed and charges are either filed or not filed, they won't - can't - have any idea.
Trump on Thursday tweeted that the investigation was "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"
The interest in Kushner's activities by the special counsel's office is no more extensive than the FBI's interest in his multiple roles on both the Trump campaign and transition team, which CNN reported last month.
"We do not know what this report refers to", Gorelick said. The special counsel's office did not respond to a request for comment on the report.
The idea that this is a witch hunt, as Trump childishly tweeted this morning, is getting more and more laughable as each passing day brings about another questionable tie or secret dealing with Russian Federation taken by this president or those in his orbit.
Coats and Rogers told a Senate panel a week ago they did not feel pressured by Trump to intervene in the case, but declined to say what Trump asked them to do. Mueller's investigation now encompasses the president's firing of Comey, the Russian government's role during the election, whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials and alleged financial crimes committed by Trump associates.
Kenneth Starr, former independent counsel, expressed confidence that the caliber of lawyers in Mueller's team would do a thorough job.
