Doctors are to provide an update on Representative Steve Scalise. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, .

The man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers.

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

The bullet that had hit Scalise was a single rifle round that "travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding". He also received an additional procedure that day to stop bleeding.

"An excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava added. Infection also is a risk, especially if the intestines were perforated.

Scalise, the House majority whip, was one of five people shot when a gunman opened fire Wednesday as the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point". He was said to have been awake on scene; however, underwent shock during his transportation to the trauma center.

"We fully expect him to be able to walk again".

They said that his "risk of death" has substantially lowered than when he arrived at the hospital. "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

Scalise's next operation will likely take place in 48 hours, Sava said.

If Scalise did not suffer nerve damage and his recovery continues without any complications, "it is possible that within three months or so, he back on his feet", said Dr. Alex Jahangir, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who was not involved in Scalise's care.

Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., paid a visit to his injured colleague at the hospital Friday.

Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch, and Barth also showed up for the game, walking with crutches.

Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's.
