In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.
Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.
Hundreds of bullet fragments remained in Scalise's pelvis area, according to Sava, some of which won't be removed due to risk of further damage.
Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding and "an imminent risk of death", Sava said.
Now, Sava said he feels "a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic" about the outcome of Scalise's treatment.
Scalise will require additional operations to fix abdominal injuries and broken bones, and will be in the hospital for some time, Sava said, adding that he couldn't yet predict the length of his hospital stay. A lobbyist shot multiple times and critically injured also remains hospitalized. The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added as a beneficiary on Wednesday.
Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said his colleague "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood". Griner was in good condition "and in good spirits", Sava said.
Scalise, who underwent a third surgery Thursday, is listed in critical condition after being shot through the hip.
President Donald Trump says GOP Congressman Steve Scalise "took a bullet for all of us".
So what does Scalise's absence mean for the majority whip position and House leadership? Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital twice and planned to go again before Thursday night's game at Nationals Park.
Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's.
Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation. His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.
Members of the U.S. Capitol Police engaged in a shootout with the assailant on Wednesday, and lawmakers said their presence probably prevented many deaths.
More than $1 million has been raised for charity through the Congressional Baseball Game, its host organization announced Thursday, a day after a shooting unfolded at the Republicans' practice for the game. "He clearly knows that they're there and appreciates their presence", Sava said.
The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m. He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members.
