But that message was overshadowed by a tweet storm in which he appeared to confirm for the first time that he is under investigation for obstruction of justice.

The Trump tweets come after the top lawyer for his transition team warned organization officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

The new allegations against Trump centre on his own admission that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation and suggestions he asked several top intelligence officials for their help altering the inquiry's direction. Trump has disputed both claims, saying flatly that he never asked Comey to drop the Flynn probe.
The transition order came the same day that Vice President Mike Pence's confirmed that he had hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.
NBC is reaching out to the White House. "With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign and the Obama administration, there was never a special counsel appointed", Trump had tweeted.
He had written a memorandum to US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, criticising Mr Comey about the way in which he handled the Russian Federation investigation.
