He died at Atlanta Medical Center on Wednesday evening from blunt force trauma due to his fall.
AMC said in a statement circulated among USA media outlets that it was temporarily shutting down production of the hit show, which is filmed in Georgia.
According to Deadline, OSHA and SAG-AFTRA have opened an investigation into how and why the stunt went wrong.
"We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for "The Walking Dead" and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set", AMC said in a statement after the accident.
The network also revealed that the bereaved family has allowed the late member to save more lives as an organ donor.
"The Walking Dead", the often-gory AMC show based on a comic series that chronicles the lives of people fighting to survive a zombie apocalypse, is filming its eighth season.
Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, posted a picture of Bernecker on Instagram, saying he "will be missed".
"John's work on "The Walking Dead" and dozens of other movies and shows will continue to entertain and excite audiences for generations".
Bernecker's work can be seen in films such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Logan, and the forthcoming Black Panther.
Bernecker's girlfriend Jennifer Cocker is reportedly upset with The Walking Dead production, and told TMZ: "Sets need to be safer".
"This tragic and untimely loss of a member of the SAG-AFTRA family is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with his loved ones and his friends and colleagues in the Georgia production community", it said.
