Manafort Meets With Senate Intel While Under A Separate Senate Subpoena

Donald Trump Jr and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort have reached a deal with the Senate Judiciary Committee to avoid facing a public testimony. Chuck Grassley (R-IA).

Manafort had been served a subpoena to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, but plans changed and the subpoena was retracted when he agreed to meet with committee investigators behind closed doors, Politico reported.

As he prepares to speak with Congressional intelligence committee this week as part of their Russian Federation probes, Donald Trump Jr. has added another lawyer to his legal team, ABC News and Reuters reported on Sunday.

The White House push against the special counsel's probe and the attempts to put the focus on potential conflicts with Mueller's team may well be an effort to distract from snowballing federal and congressional investigations into possible election-year coordination between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Manafort's testimony had been widely anticipated but took place without prior announcement early Tuesday, hours before senior White House adviser Jared Kushner appeared before the House Intelligence Committee. Dianne Feinstein of California, said negotiations over Manafort's voluntary cooperation broke down after Manafort's lawyer indicated he was willing to provide only one transcribed interview with congressional staff.

"Paul Manafort is not a cooperating witness".

Manafort was one of three top Trump campaign aides who attended a meeting in NY a year ago with a group of Russian advocates.

President Donald Trump is complaining about a Washington Post report that the Russian ambassador to the U.S. said he discussed election-related issues with U.S. Sen. Rinat Akhmetshin, a Russian American lobbyist who also attended the meeting, has said that Veselnitskaya left behind documents describing the information.

The committee also is looking at the work of Glenn Simpson, a political operative who was involved in the compilation of a dossier of unsubstantiated and sometimes salacious information about Trump and his associates and their interactions with Russians.
