Former Red Wings coach Bryan Murray dies of cancer at 74

The Anaheim Ducks family mourns the loss of Bryan Murray, who passed away this morning.

Not only was Bryan Murray recognized for his work by Sens fans, he was known for his work league wide.

The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time. Under his leadership, the Capitals saw the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

He last coached in 2007-08 and was Ottawa's GM until stepping down to an advisory capacity last season because of his health.

Murray coached the Senators to the 2007 Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Ducks in five games.

Murray coached 1,239 regular-season and 112 playoff games over parts of 18 seasons. He also served as general manager in Anaheim and Detroit and coached in Washington, Detroit, Anaheim and Ottawa.

In 1998, South Florida coaches Jimmy Johnson, Pat Riley, Jim Leyland and Bryan Murray stand together with 10-year-old Michael Fernandez at the fifth annual Make-a-Wish Foundation of South Florida Sports Banquet & Memorabilia Auction at the Signature Grand in Davie.

Murray was the head coach of the Bears in 1980-81, helping lead Hershey to a playoff appearance.

"As both head coach and general manager of the team (2001-2004), Bryan led our organization with class, dignity and charisma", the team said in a statement.

"He sort of tried to take the pressure off the team by doing stuff and yelling and screaming at the referees and having fun with them to alleviate some of the pressure that we had", Laughlin said.

Things changed for good in 1982-83, the first season Murray was paired with General Manager David Poile. Hall of Famer Larry Robinson said Murray's death made for a "sad day for hockey". "Thank you for everything Bryan".

"Let's go to extra overtime and keep playing like the game we played against the Islanders many years ago and we went to four overtime periods", Murray said at the time. When Murray was honored by his peers at the general managers meeting in Florida in 2015, Fletcher spoked about Murray's ability as a scout. "Touched a lot of lives". Murray has acted for some time as DG of the last three organizations.

Even opponents and rivals respected Murray, who said in 2014 he felt bad that he couldn't respond to colleagues' messages about his cancer diagnosis fast enough.

There hasn't been a lot of newsworthy items in Sensland of late, and it is with a heavy heart that we learned of the passing of Bryan Murray at the age of 74.
