Jammu and Kashmir: Two soldiers killed, 3 injured in encounter in Shopian

Shopian: Three militants were today killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir, the police said today.

An encounter has broken out between terrorists and security forces in Shopian town of south Kashmir. The Army officers retaliated, leading to a gunfight.

Reports said that hundreds of people tried to save the militants but forces kept them at bay.

In the morning on Sunday, police control room Shopian said that a house in which militants were hiding had been blown up.

The gunfight triggered after contingents of Indian troops and police encircled the area on intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

On Wednesday, three terrorists have been killed in an encounter at Tral in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

Mehmood Ghaznavi, a resident of Chadoora in Budgam of Central Kashmir, was operational commander of Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir.

The gun battle began when a team of local police and the Indian army launched searches in Avneera village.

Seven civilians had sustained pellet injuries on Saturday when protesters engaged the security forces in clashes to break the cordon around the site of the gunfight. They were later evacuated to Army Base Hospital for the treatment, where two among them succumbed to their injuries. Two Army jawans were also martyred in the encounter, while four others were injured.

Internet services have been blocked in Badgam district following the identification of Itoo among the slain militants.
