Though Darren Aronofsky has ventured into his fair share of grim and disturbing material over the years, he's yet to deliver a true horror film. The official synopsis for mother! keeps things short and sweet rather than diving head first into a bevy of juicy plot details that most of us would like kept hidden until we actually witness the film for ourselves next month.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the man who helmed "Black Swan" and other psychological film classics such as "Requiem for a Dream" and "Pi", "Mother!" is a horror-thriller that explores the relationship between a wife (Jennifer Lawrence) and her husband (Javier Bardem) as unusual individuals begin appearing one after another at their home.
Trailer of the film starts by ticking all the horror boxes: A big home, A big home in a lonely place, A big home with husband and wife, a big home with husband, wife and terror.
"What do they want?"
Mother! certainly seems to be paying its dues to traditional horror structures, but knowing how Aronofsky has played with the genre in the past - with Requiem for a Dream or Black Swan - be prepared to expect the entirely unexpected. Mother! also uses that kind of screenplay but less surrealism. Mother! has been eyed as an important Oscar contender from paramount in all the categories.
