Sources said the working committee, the highest policy and decision-making body of the party, did not discuss any other issue, not even the Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat although all the top leaders informally talked about it.
Former Union minister and Congress veteran Jairam Ramesh said on Monday, August 7, that the party is in "serious crisis", and that it needs to overhaul its structure in order to survive.
"This is true that the Congress is going through challenging phase but we don't agree this that there is existential crisis". The Congress has alleged that the BJP was pressuring the Election Commision to dismiss its plea seeking to quash two of its MLAs votes for flouting election rules. Whatever Jairam Ramesh has said that can be his personal views.
Sources said the proposal to hold an AICC or a CWC meeting in Mumbai was on the table till the last moment, with Maharashtra unit chief Ashok Chavan also reasoning to the leadership that 1942 session was held in the port city. Seven Congress MLAs have resigned from the party over the last fortnight. We have to understand we are up against Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah. The party said such sessions had only been repeated twice to mark the anniversaries of independence. "And they think differently, they act differently, and if we are not flexible in our approach, we will become irrelevant, frankly", Ramesh said in an interview. "India has changed, the Congress party has to change", he added.
