The driver of the Challenger was taken into custody and charges were pending, said Al Thomas, the Charlottesville police chief.

James Alex Fields, a 20-year-old from Maumee, Ohio, is being held in the Albermarle-Charlottesville County Regional Jail.

According to CNN, 20-year-old OH resident is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder, in addition to malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death.

Reported injuries ranged from life-threatening to minor, said Thomas.

The vehicle that plowed into a crowd of Charlottesville counter-protesters Saturday afternoon was purchased in Northern Kentucky and registered in OH, records show.

The crash on a downtown pedestrian mall Saturday left a 32-year-old woman dead and sent 19 others to a local hospital, five of them in critical condition. Lorenz reports that authorities believe that the suspect acted out of fear as protesters swarmed the vehicle, some allegedly acting violent.

"The premeditated violence that our community experienced today was completely unacceptable", Thomas said to reporters Saturday night.
