The 24-year-old Harper, the 2015 National League MVP, is having another outstanding season, hitting.326 with 29 home runs and 87 RBIs in 106 games this season.
The Washington Nationals have provided the Bryce Harper injury update that Major League Baseball fans were waiting for. Harper needed help off the field and appeared unable to put pressure on his leg. Harper has been relatively healthy this season and missed just three days with mild groin soreness back in May.
Saturday's home game began just after 10 p.m. ET, following a three-hour rain delay, and it was raining steadily when Harper's injury happened.
Nationals manager Dusty Baker came out of the dugout with his hands sitting on his cap in disbelief.
The news is perhaps the best possible for the Nationals after Harper's injury on Saturday night, as his foot slipped off a wet first base as he was trying to beat out an infield single, and it slid awkwardly onto the infield directly below.
MASN reporter Dan Kolko tweeted a positive message for the Nationals and their fans after the game about Harper.
"I don't think he has any fear", Baker said. Given injuries to Harper, Stephen Strasburg - who has a rehab assignment Monday - and others, the Nationals' focus is getting healthy for the playoffs.
"He's definitely one of those guys that you can't replace on a team". Boasting a 14.5 game lead in the NL East, Washington can afford to take it slow with Harper from here on out. Right now, the Nats are out of healthy outfielders on the 40-man roster since Michael Taylor and Jayson Werth are on the disabled list as well.
He said: "We dodged a bullet here".
