North Korea Is Pushing Its Limits With The Trump Administration

The U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting on North Korea's missile launch. That plan seeks to set the stage for a resumption of talks after Pyongyang suspends its nuclear and ballistic missile activity and the USA and South Korea suspend their joint military exercises.

Standing before a B-2 stealth bomber and a vast USA flag, Donald Trump on Friday lashed out at North Korea warned that advanced United States weaponry could make the souls of America's enemies "crumble".

But it's a "new day" at the U.N., said U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. McMaster says Trump, much like previous presidents, will push a message of reform, calling for more transparency and accountability at the United Nations.

"We will defend our people and our civilization from all who dare to threaten our way of life", Trump said at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday after Pyongyang conducted its longest-ever test flight of a ballistic missile.

Once again Kim Jong-un, with his latest threatening launch of a long-range missile over Japan yesterday, has demonstrated both North Korea's rapidly accelerating technical capabilities, and Pyongyang's aptitude for strategic and psychological intimidation.

UPDATE (8:02PM): (AP) -U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has called the latest missile launch a reckless act by the North Koreans.

North Korea on Friday fired a missile which flew over Japan, but resulted in Japanese citizens being told to take cover. She expected a Trump call for maximum pressure on North Korea.

And what have the US and its allies achieved?

And while the first two may be familiar in USA post-war diplomacy, the third is a loaded term in global relations, hinting at Trump's "America First" agenda.

The emergency meeting of Security Council was convened at the request of Japan and the US. Russian Federation is the largest employer of North Korean forced labor.

"President Moon ordered [the military] to closely analyze and increase the readiness posture against new types of threats from North Korea, such as EMP [electromagnetic pulse] and biochemical threats", presidential spokesman Park Su-hyun said.

USA options range from everything to accepting North Korea as a nuclear power to using military force in a bid to destroy its arsenal and even oust leader Kim Jong Un.

"We call on all nations to take new measures against the Kim [Jong Un] regime", the top USA diplomat said. North Korea also has the world's largest standing army. "China and Russian Federation must indicate their intolerance for these reckless missile launches by taking direct actions of their own", Tillerson demanded.

Diplomacy on the North Korean nuclear standoff has been stalled for years.

Experts have long questioned if the USA could indeed attack North Korea, given its ability to cause massive casualties south of the border.

While U.S. officials say they prefer a diplomatic solution to this nuclear standoff, military force is also an option.
