With the reported outbreak of the virulent ailment in the state, Akwa Ibom is now the third Niger Delta state affected after Bayelsa and Rivers.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, urged Nigerians to disregard the report which according to him is being spread by some unscrupulous persons to fit into a sinister agenda.

Some cases had earlier been reported in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, both in Nigeria's south-south.

The Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday directed the state's Ministry of Health to embark on enlightenment campaigns to prevent the outbreak of monkey pox in the state.

Health experts explain that Monkey-pox, a virus found in monkeys and other wild animals is, however, rare in humans, adding that it belongs to the same family of Chicken-pox and Small-pox. Nigerians are therefore advised to avoid eating monkeys and bush-meat.

FG denial of being the cause of the Monkey Pox was in response to alleged reports in social media that the disease was as a result of free medical services the Federal Government carried out in the affected states.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Health, Babatunde Ipaye, while addressing a press conference, said no incident of monkeypox has been recorded in the state.

The commissioner said Enugu State has surveillance team, a set of officers distributed across the 17 local government areas of the state, whose job is to look out for diseases that we overlook.

The resolution of the House was sequel to the passage of a motion by a member, Diri Douye, titled: "Suspected outbreak of monkey pox in Bayelsa State - Urgent need for free detail government intervention and global community support".

"Again, we have the state epidemiologist who is a medical doctor in the Ministry of Health that coordinates all these people".

He expressed shock at the admission of the Minister of Health that "monkey pox could not be confirmed in Nigeria until laboratory investigations by World Health Organisation (WHO) referral laboratory in Dakar, Senegal".

Meanwhile the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso- Markson, has hinted that the state government would establish community radios to help government in its awareness campaigns.
