Kareem Hunt and Deshaun Watson will have the spotlight to themselves when the Chiefs and Texans meet on Sunday Night Football.
To make matters worse for the Texans, J.J. Watt suffered a tibial plateau fracture, and according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, will also miss the rest of the 2017 season. Oh jeez, I can't believe I just typed that. There has been no further update on Mercilus' injury.
"I can't sugarcoat it, I am devastated", Watt wrote on Twitter. What was setting up as a glorious sports day in Houston turned into a disaster, especially when you add the Astros' 10-3 loss to the Red Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS.
J.J. Watt's injury in particular was a hard sight. However, you can't dismiss the effect that being backed by a great defense has had on him.
Watt was injured while being blocked midway through the first quarter and fell to the ground.
He remained on the sideline under a tent for a few minutes before being taken to the locker room on a cart.
Watt went down with the injury on the Texans' opening drive, and was in visible pain.
About 30 minutes later, television footage showed Watt walking on crutches to an ambulance before sitting on a stretcher, being moved into the ambulance and taken away.
If there's one player who goes down and the season goes down with him, it's not DeAndre Hopkins, it's not Whitney Mercilus and it's not J.J. Watt.
The 28-year-old Watt had 15 tackles this season, but didn't get a sack in five games. However, it's that same daring style that makes Watson so unsafe, and there is little doubt that his deep ball, escapability, and scrambling are making teams have to defend the entire field far more than any other quarterback in the O'Brien Era.
