Local leader in India's Mumbai warns he won't allow bullet train project

Speaking to reporters at his residence in Dadar, Thackera said, "Until present infra of local railways is made better, not a single brick will be allowd to be placed for bullet train in Mumbai". He also announced a protest march at Churchgate on October 5, to press on issues involving the improvements in workings of the suburban railway system. The reply in Parliament in August that year had said overbridges had been sanctioned in five stations under Wester Railways, including Elphinstone Road.

Thackeray questioned why the Railway Ministry had said that the rain had triggered the stampede.

The former union minister of finance on Saturday also said in a series of tweets that the train would, like demonetisation, "kill everything else including safety".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe laid the foundation of 508-kilometer Mumbai to Ahmedabad bullet train project in Modi's home state, Gujarat.

Taking another dig at the government, the MNS chief asked, "Why do we need terrorists or enemies like Pakistan? it seems our own Railway is enough to kill people".

Thackeray also warned the authorities to take action against illegal hawkers who occupy foot-over bridges in Mumbai. "This Piyush Goyal is good for nothing.just for one bullet train, Suresh Prabhu was changed, he was good", said Raj.

The unprecedented influx of migrants in the city is the reason behind the infrastructural collapse, claims Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray.

Thackeray said that he would submit a list of problems faced by Mumbai suburban rail commuters to the Railway Ministry next week.

Thackeray's comments came a day after a stampede on a footbridge at the Elphinstone railway station in Mumbai killed 23 and injured over 30 others. "I have ordered a high-level enquiry into the matter", Goyal told media gathered outside the Mumbai International airport on Friday.
