Ehlinger would attempt to lead the team to an overtime win, but would be intercepted in the end zone to end the game.

On Saturday, the Cowboys leaned on their defense. Texas had the ball spotted at the six-yard line on the play, shortly after being given the ball at the 12-yard line on a pass interference call in the end zone against Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State improves to 6-1 (3-1 Big 12) and will face West Virginia next Saturday before meeting No. 9 Oklahoma on November 4.

The interception came on third down with the Longhorns a short distance away from a shot at a game-tying field goal try to force a second overtime.

In the second half, the Cowboys' vaunted offense - which entered Saturday's game ranked first nationally in yards per game and second in scoring - was ineffective. They can thank a host of mistakes for that: a Justice Hill fumble inside the 10, a missed tackle that allowed Texas receiver John Burt to tiptoe the sideline for a 90-yard reception on the ensuing drive and Jordan Brailford's failure to recover an Ehlinger fumble with nobody around him (Ehlinger eventually recovered) chief among them. The Cowboys were without two, sometimes three, injured starting offensive linemen, and Texas dared them to run by dropping defenders into pass coverage.

The Oklahoma State-Texas game will kickoff at 11 a.m. CT on October 21. Oklahoma State beat Texas for the fifth straight time in Austin, the most ever by a Longhorns opponent.

"Forever around here, it's been the offense saved us", Gundy said.

Coming off a 59-16 blowout over Baylor, the No. 10 Cowboys are looking to improve their 2-1 conference record and stay within striking distance of Big 12 leader No. 4 TCU.

Texas: The Longhorns had losing seasons the last three years under coach Charlie Strong. Amendola made up for it with a 34-yard field goal in overtime.
