Gary Andersen's tenure at Oregon State lasted 30 games. Coach Gary Andersen took on something of a rebuilding project in Corvallis, but a 7-23 record over two-plus seasons, a 3-18 mark in the Pac-12 and the recent blowout losses had him on the hot seat. Andersen was in his third year as the head football coach at Oregon State. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field.

Assistant coach Cory Hall will take over the Beavers top spot for the rest of the season, officials in the athletic department said.

The Beavers are now fresh off a 38-10 rout at the hands of Southern California.

Andersen's contract was set to run through 2021 following an extension added last December, but both sides said they released each other from any obligations and payments.

Andersen agreed to let the school out of his contract which was slated to run through 2022. The Beavers finished the season well with a rivalry win over OR, and they hoped to take another step forward in 2017.

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes also indicated his role is to support the current coaching staff, and to relay the message to Oregon State recruits that a future in Corvallis remains a desirable future destination. "His decision is made for the right reasons and values, and it speaks volumes about the kind of honorable person that Gary Andersen is".

That game in Los Angeles was perhaps the Beavers' least likely win entering the season, which makes Andersen's departure after a routine loss to the Trojans all the more surprising. With the Badgers, he went 19-7 and won the Big Ten West in 2014.

Oregon State produced a Heisman Trophy victor, Terry Baker, in 1962 and went to the Rose Bowl in the 1964 season. Before arriving at Wisconsin, Andersen was the head coach at Utah State for four seasons. Oregon State beat Oregon in the 2016 version of the Civil War rivalry game and it was a great way to end a trying season.
