The suspect was taken to the police station for standard debriefing that's when the University says the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head. Texas Tech spokesman Chris Cook said that Talkington Hall, where Daniels lived, was one of the four dorms where campus carry is permitted, although gun owners are required to register their firearms with the university, which Daniels didn't do.

Daniels attended Seguin High School, and an April 2016 school newsletter includes a photo of him, beaming along with his fellow student thespians and theater crew as they celebrated advancing to district in a UIL competition.

"We don't yet have all of the facts in this case, but we do know police officers put their lives on the line to protect others each and every day", said ACC District Chief Lynn Dixon.

Daniels had what appeared to be his first run-in with law enforcement during his senior year, when he was charged in September 2015 with possession of drug paraphernalia and pleaded no contest to the Class C misdemeanor. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Texas Tech Police Department, "said Corporal Steve LeSueur, Odessa Police Department".

After a search that lasted almost two hours Daniels was arrested on campus near City Bank Coliseum.

That referred to a law that took effect a year ago allowing Texans with concealed carry permits to bring guns into university classrooms and buildings. The law applies to those 21 or older, and he did not have a concealed-carry permit.

Texas Democratic Party Deputy Executive Director Manny Garcia said in a statement Tuesday that "our words were inadequate, hurried and we apologize", adding that the tweet has been removed.

"You just need to pray for them and pray for the police officer's family as well and pray for the college, all colleges, we need to do more of that", James said.

Texas Tech student Hollis Daniels, 19, has been charged with the capital murder of police officer Floyd East Jr.

Bonds says another officer left the room and then heard a loud bang. East's body camera was taken.

Police are looking into how Daniels gained access to a gun since he was too young to even possess a handgun in the state of Texas.

Detectives say that in an interview, Daniels told them, "I [messed] up". During a news conference that was live-streamed by the local NBC affiliate, Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath said that officers were called to Daniels's dorm after receiving reports of a student acting erratically and "reported to be in possession of a weapon". The student ran from the station as campus police evaluated the situation and informed school officials, prompting a campus wide search and lockdown.

Paxton said in a statement that he'll be in Lubbock on Tuesday "to offer the entire support" of his office. Two years ago, an online petition purportedly of Texas Tech faculty and staff opposing the state's campus carry law garnered nearly 850 signatures.

Daniels was captured near the Lubbock Municipal Auditorium, Lubbock police said.

Texas is one of 10 states to allow students to carry concealed weapons on campus but Daniels, 19, illegally did so. He was later spotted by university police.

It is not clear if Daniels had the gun on him at that point, or if he took the weapon from an officer.

James waited by his phone, talking to his daughter Mackenzie who was hiding in the basement of the building she was in as police searched for the 19-year-old suspect.

University officials identified the suspect Monday night as Hollis Daniels. Officers then brought the suspect to the police station.

"It's definitely a sorrowful feeling because he was just doing his job and he got shot for it", said Austin Davis, a junior at Texas Tech.
