Next step: Leak to the media what Goodell is looking for.
According to ESPN, he wants $50 million a year and a private jet for life to remain in his current role. One owner said, "You don't get to have this many messes over the years like Roger has had and survive it". One NFL owner said the new proposal is "just too much for Roger" calling it offensive.
In the letter sent to the compensation committee and National Football League counsel, it stated Jones "has discovered a number of very concerning issues", including a contention that Blank has "misled" the owners not serving on the committee and that "critical facts" have been misrepresented.
"One NFL owner told ESPN that there are 'several owners in this league who don't make $40 million a year.' The owner was referring to the salaries that owners take, which does not include the increase in valuations that each NFL franchise has undergone", the two ESPN insiders noted."I basically feel this extension of Roger should be reviewed and approved by all the owners, not just a few of the owners".
The biggest proponent to seeing Goodell eventually ousted as commissioner would be Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart said Thursday that negotiations will continue despite the lawsuit threat and that the league has already authorized the committee to make an extension of Goodell's contract.
The NFL's Compensation Committee will hold a conference call Monday to "discuss and further push ahead the proposed extension" for Goodell. "He can stand to show some humility, but he won't listen to staff".
Blank removed Jones as an "ad hoc" member of the compensation committee after Jones threatened to sue the league over a possible extension for Goodell. "He has said he's committed to it".
Yet there are issues that others owners aside from Jones are aware of, and they are wrestling now with how to best handle it.
Jones also denied that Goodell's suspension of star Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot for domestic abuse allegations was the main reason for the potential lawsuit.
