VETERANS DAY PROGRAMS

Chris Walsh, a Marine Corps veteran, former police chief and Casper city councilman, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Elsie Harrigan, principal of the school, said it's important for all students, no matter how young, to participate in the ceremony and learn what veterans have done for them.

Breakfast for veterans and the flag volunteers begins at 8 a.m.at the American Legion Hall with Auxiliary Unit 42 making the breakfast.

This year, the event will take place at Blanton Elementary, 4101 Lynbrook Ave.

Some veterans serve as reservists in the five branches of the military - Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy - as well as in the National Guard, training and serving close to home in the event they are needed for active military operations in the US or overseas. You can also donate financially in honor or in memory of a veteran.

This is the 14th Annual Veterans' Day Celebration held at Shelledy Elementary School. Brown County Veteran Services Officer Greg Peterson will be the keynote speaker. He's been coming to the Veterans Day assembly for nine years. In the five decades since the Vietnam War, public appreciation of veterans has changed significantly.

Mylee said she's glad to be a part of the event. "I hope (the students) see what it's like to be honored". The national anthem will be sung by Clara Kelly, a cantor at San Rafael Catholic Church.

"A military veteran aims for excellence", she said during her presentation. "We like them to bring in pictures, artifacts, things they can share with the kids to give the kids a sense of what it's like to serve in our military". Richard Pusateri, Manager of the Military and Veteran's Services Office, says that with an 80% graduation rate and with an average GPA past year of 3.3, veteran students are characteristically successful at John Jay. After being stationed in Fort Bragg, Yorty now pursues a double major in peace, war and defense and political science, while holding a position as the event coordinator for the Carolina Veterans Organization.

Julianna Uphoff, Custer Elementary 5th grader says, "Veterans day means when you kind of celebrate what the veterans have done for America". He has been a USA magistrate judge for the Southern District of California since 2009.
