Stalker set woman and her family on fire: woman succumbs to injuries, family critical

In yet another shocking incident of a stalker turning killer, a young Chennai engineer was burnt alive late night on Monday allegedly by a former classmate who had been stalking her for about a month. Her sister and mother also suffered severe burns while trying to save her. However, Induja and her family had refused to talk with Ashok initially as he is claiming that he just wanted to speak to Indhuja for a few minutes.

Furious after his proposal getting rejected, the accused started stalking her because of which she had even stopped going to her office.

Induja's relatives alleged that Akash had been pursuing Induja against her wishes for almost a month.

According to the statistics on crime against women tabled in the Lok Sabha by minister of state for home Hansraj Ahir recently, stalking cases showed a consistent rise in last three years.

While a few reports said that the neighbours were the ones who nabbed Akash, an India Today report said that the accused had escaped the scene and was arrested on Tuesday morning. This is when, the police say, the accused threw petrol on the victim and used a lighter to set her on fire.

The Chennai Police have detained one Akash in connection to the incident. Her mother and sister sustained burn injuries when they tried to save her.

On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house.

Other reports, however, claim that there had been an altercation between Indhuja and the stalker first, after which he poured the petrol on her.

Sindhuja's father Shanmugam, 48, is working in Dubai.
