Conyers To Retire Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

Conyers stepped down as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee after it was revealed he had settled a wrongful dismissal suit with one former staffer after she accused him of firing her for resisting his sexual advances.

Buzzfeed News reported on November 20 that Conyers had settled a complaint in 2015 from a woman who alleged she was sacked from his Washington staff because she rejected his sexual advances.

Ian Conyers, a grandson of John Conyers' brother, told The New York Times early Tuesday that the decision comes after the 88-year-old Democrat's doctor "advised him that the rigor of another campaign would be too much for him, just in terms of his health".

Democratic Rep. John Conyers will reportedly not seek re-election after multiple women claimed he sexually harassed them including a former staffer, according to a new report released Tuesday.

Reed also spoke to the Detroit Free Press shortly after making the remark on Twitter and said that he expects the congressman to be on the program - either in the studio or by phone - and discuss whether he will remain in the U.S. House or resign in the wake of several sexual harassment allegations. "If we're going to raise this unholy and unlawful guillotine, calling for the head of John Conyers, then (an effort to remove) the president of the United States" must begin, he said. We're used to it.

Conyers' family say the veteran lawmaker is suffering from stress-related illness.

Rep. John Conyers' attorney is expected to make an announcement later this morning. The report didn't specify how Ian Conyers knew of the congressman's plans. He's been re-elected 25 times since and is the longest-serving current member of Congress, and the fourth-longest serving member of the House in history. When sexual-misconduct allegations surface in the private sector, a boss really can say "You're fired" - as Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose and others can attest.

The committee has been reviewing harassment allegations against Conyers.

Congress has been reviewing policies on how to handle sexual harassment complaints after a string of cases involving prominent figures in the USA media, Hollywood and politics.
