IMD's preliminary natural disaster report said the epicentre in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand.
Mild tremors were also felt in Dehradun, Patiala and Chandigarh today.
Tremors were felt in several parts of North India as a medium-intensity natural disaster measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said.
Across North India, no damage to property or loss of life was done by the mild intensity quake or otherwise disrupting normal life. It is also known as the third most earthquake-prone city in India.
The epicentre of the quake was at 30 km depth, and the tremor is considered moderate. It falls in the Himalayan region. Even on Tuesday, there was a 3.3-magnitude quake.
