50 injured after passenger train hits freight train in Germany

At least 50 people were injured in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train near the German city of Duesseldorf on Tuesday evening, police told AFP.

Local media reported on Tuesday the accident happened near the train station in the town of Meerbusch, near Dusseldorf.

Fire crews are working to free passengers.

The initial estimates of injury were lower; Deutsche Bahn rail company, which operated the passenger train, first estimated only five people had been hurt, then raised the estimate to almost 50. "Three people have moderate injuries and another three people have serious injuries", Meerbusch fire department said in a statement.

The regional passenger train RE7 operated on the track from Rheine to Krefeld.

Power to the train line is set to be cut off for a short period so as to help free the people on board.
